When a family breaks up, the children have to face the practical changes in living arrangements as well as feeling the great emotional impact of the change in their family life. As a parent, you can manage things to be best for your children, and keep the impact as low as possible.
Relate for Parents puts the emphasis on the children. Relate can help you deal with the process of separation in a positive way, and help you learn how best to help the children through the experience. We can help you shield your children from negative emotions and plan important contact with the partner who is no longer at home.
Relate for Parents is offered at a number of locations. Find your nearest Relate here to see if the service is offered in your local area, or call 0300 100 1234.
Charges
Relate makes a charge for its services but does not aim to make a profit. Individual Centres will be able to advise you of their charges, and some offer subsidised sessions.
Other support
Relate can support you through a break-up with other services designed to make the change as smooth and painless as possible:
Mediation
Mediation is not like counselling. It helps couples who have decided to separate or divorce with the practical aspects of a relationship break-up, like finance, property and parenting issues, and helps you come to an agreement over what should be done. To find out if your local Relate offers a Mediation service, find our nearest Relate here, or call 0300 100 1234.
Parents Apart
For parents who are divorcing or separating. Separation or divorce doesn't just affect the adults in a relationship. The way children view relationships can be affected for life by a divorce or a separation. This course will help you manage the practical and the emotional aspects of being parents living apart.
Relate counselling for young people
Relate offers a range of services for young people, including help for people whose parents are separating or divorcing. Spending time with a counsellor in private on a one to one basis can help you understand your feelings better, and understand what is happening in your parents' relationship. To find out if counselling for young people is available in your area, find your nearest Relate here, or call 0300 100 1234.
